Pennsylvania Highlands Community College General Education Statement

General education at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College reflects our conviction that all associate degree graduates must demonstrate proficiency in the following foundational skills: critical thinking, scientific/quantitative reasoning, information literacy, effective communication, awareness of a diverse world, and technological expertise. These skills are essential for success in both college and career in an increasingly complex global economy, and they will ensure that students are equipped to develop as well-rounded and competent individuals through a lifetime of learning.

  • Critical Analysis and Reasoning: Students will be able to synthesize resources and use higher-level thinking and analytical skills to support their reasoning.
  • Scientific/Quantitative Reasoning: Students will be able to apply scientific and quantitative reasoning and methods to solve problems.
  • Information Literacy: Students will be able to identify, access, and evaluate the necessary information for an academic subject and understand the issues surrounding the ethical and legal use of information.
  • Effective Communication: Students will be able to demonstrate clear and complete written and oral communications while examining situational and personal contexts.
  • Technological Competency: Students will be able to utilize fundamental tools and applications for an academic subject and demonstrate basic knowledge of emerging and evolving technology.
  • Cultural Diversity and Ethical Perspectives: Students will be able to explain their own values and beliefs, understand the histories and cultures behind those values, and consider the moral and ethical complexities of choices made as individuals and as members of diverse communities.
